What to look for when buying a used Honda CR-V?

The Honda CR-V is a large compact crossover that entered the market in 1997. The CR-V (Compact Recreational Vehicle) is a global vehicle produced in several countries for regional markets, including in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada for North American sales. The CR-V is now in its fifth generation of production and is based on the Honda Civic's platform. The first-generation Honda CR-V became the first sport utility vehicle designed entirely in-house. It was first introduced in Japan and then, a year later in 1997, to the United States and then gradually to other markets globally. The first-gen CR-V was powered by a four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission. The first-generation CR-V was noted for its strong acceleration and interior space, but received a public relations blow when it did poorly in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing. The second-generation CR-V was introduced in 2002, fully redesigned with a more efficient engine and better crash test returns. The original transmissions from the first-generation were kept and then later changed for more updated models. The third-generation Honda CR-V was introduced for 2007. Major design changes included a more aerodynamic look, a liftgate replacing the swing-out tailgate, and the removal of the rear tire from the rear gate. A more robust and efficient four-cylinder engine was introduced, having debuted in the Honda Accord before. An extensive body redesign in 2010 was undertaken as well. The fourth-generation CR-V was introduced in 2012 with a major body restyling and light powertrain upgrade. A facelift in 2015 brought a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to replace the automatic along with a major upgrade to the engine for efficiency and power output. The fifth-generation Honda CR-V entered the market as a 2017 model year vehicle. Still based on the Civic the CR-V has two four-cylinder engine options, one of which is a turbocharged upgrade. Major upgrades also include updated safety and driver assistance technologies and a more modern body style. As a part of the fastest-growing market in automotive, the compact crossover CR-V has been steadily growing in sales numbers in the United States. Most well known for its roomy interior, strong road presence, and compact maneuverability, the CR-V has become one of the best-selling vehicles in North America. Common complaints in the CR-V are from the 2002 and 2003 model years where air conditioning issues are often had when the vehicle reaches high mileage (over 100,000). There are otherwise few consumer complaints about the Honda CR-V.

The 2020 Honda CR-V has aged quite well since its last full makeover in model year 2017. By comparison to its peers, the CR-V still offers value, size, efficiency, and reputation as its main attractions. Honda also makes no big missteps with the CR-V that could drive possible buyers away.





This two-row, five-passenger crossover is among the top-selling non-truck vehicles in America for good reason. The value of the CR-V is enormous. The size of the CR-V is perfect for a family of three or four. The CR-V is a perfect vehicle for a family with a vacation home they drive to frequently. The 2020 CR-V is an outstanding commuter vehicle with EPA ratings up to 38 MPG Combined (Hybrid trim). And the best thing about the CR-V is that it is a great vehicle to be behind the wheel of. It's a very satisfying daily driver.





With a starting price of around $26K, the Honda CR-V is a vehicle that screams value. Our tester was a top-trim Touring AWD with an as-tested price of $35,870. The CR-V comes in four trims and price levels. New for 2020 is a fifth hybrid trim that we are very excited about and will cover separately. Aside from the hybrid, all Honda CR-Vs have the same turbocharged engine and smooth CVT transmission, meaning there is no low-power base engine to avoid.

2018 Honda CR-V

An all-new Honda CR-V was introduced in 2017 with some pretty?major changes to the best-selling compact crossover. The 2018 model carries those on and does very well with its turbocharged engine, excellent interior ergonomics and carefully designed safety systems. Some might be surprised at how?good the optional all-wheel drive systems are at keeping the CR-V out of trouble.

The 2018 Honda CR-V has a lot in common with the equally popular Honda Civic, having a similar dashboard, instrument cluster, driver controls and updated infotainment. There's a reason the new CR-V continues to win awards and remains a best-seller in the segment.
